Banker to the Poor

Learn More...

This autobiography of the world-renowned, visionary economist who came up with a simple but revolutionary solution to end world poverty--micro-credit--has become the classic text for a growing movement.

In 1983 Muhammad Yunus established Grameen, a bank devoted to providing the poorest of Bangladesh with miniscule loans. He aimed to help the poor by supporting the spark of personal initiative and enterprise by which they could lift themselves out of poverty forever. It was an idea born on a day in 1976 when he loaned $27 from his own pocket to forty-two people living in a tiny village. They were stool makers who only needed enough credit to purchase the raw materials for their trade. Yunus's loan helped them break the cycle of poverty and changed their lives forever. His solution to world poverty, founded on the belief that credit is a fundamental human right, is brilliantly simple: loan poor people money on terms that are suitable to them, teach them a few sound financial principles, and they will help themselves.

On Hold

UPDATE! (I know--finally, right?!)

So here's the deal, we've been slacking on our POTD and AOTW posts because we're revamping our strategy and are going to focus instead on building our network of friends and readers. Researching a POTD and AOTW can be intensely time consuming and as such we're moving it down on our list of priorities for the time being.

SO, while you still may receive a POTD or AOTW notice, we're not promising anything until our friends hit 5000 and our blog subscibers number at least 500.

Sadly, this also goes for several of the contests which we had planned, so make sure you're subscribed to the blog!

Oh, and as always... tell your friends, they should be OUR friends too!

Sacred

Sacred
Music: Rock / Pop Punk / Gothic

http://www.sacred.uk.com/

The Beautiful Horror...music for the maladjusted
Imagine equal measures of plaintive melancholy, passionate mellifluousness and thrasonical bombast set against a kaleidoscopic soundscape. It’s difficult isn’t it? And that’s why it had to be created.

Hailing from Brighton, Jemima Price and Virginia van Kan crossed paths in 2004. "Sacred" is the intriguing mix that has risen from that fated meeting.

Together "Sacred" creates powerfully dramatic and moody music that almost haunts the listener. While drawing influences from a foundation of artists such as Evanescence, Garbage, & Marylin Manson it's little wonder how Sacred has been able to build their music up to the furious heights it's reached today--and why they show no signs of slowing down!

Once the course was set, the controls were opened full throttle to deliver an album of dark-side music for the maladjusted, music that captures beauty in darkness.

Jemima Price: “We wanted to create music that was shadowy and haunting yet beautiful and dramatic, that would give you goose bumps for both reasons."

Independently released on their "Phobia" label, their CD "The Beautiful Horror" (Inspired by a line from Apocolypse Now) is only available for purchase on the web & through their MySpace pages. Even so, Sacred has seen incredible sales and an overwhelming reaction to their brand of music.

Virginia van Kan: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the response we’ve received, both to the album, and the shows. There’s been a massive reaction on the net.”

So much of a reaction in fact, Sacred's moody & dark tracks will soon be featured in movies and on shows such as CSI. So start paying attention to the music of your favorite movies and television shows in the near future, there's a good chance you'll hear Sacred providing the soundtrack.

Constitution Day

Constitution of the United States
Politics: The Constitution

http://www.usconstitution.net

Though technically the anniversary was the 17th, it's still worth noting Constitution Day. Below you'll find some facts about the Constitution of the United States as well as links to learn more and read the full text of this historic document:

On Sept. 17, 1787, the U.S. Constitution was signed by thirty-nine brave men who changed the course of history. Now Constitution Day is a time for us to continue their legacy and develop habits of citizenship in a new generation of Americans.

1. The U. S Constitution was written in the same Pennsylvania State House where the Declaration of Independence was signed and where George Washington received his commission as Commander of the Continental Army. Now called Independence Hall, the building still stands today on Independence Mall in Philadelphia, directly across from the National Constitution Center.

2. Written in 1787, the Constitution was signed on September 17th. But it wasn't until 1788 that it was ratified by the necessary nine states.

3. The U.S. Constitution was prepared in secret, behind locked doors that were guarded by sentries.

4. Some of the original framers and many delegates in the state ratifying conventions were very troubled that the original Constitution lacked a description of individual rights. In 1791, Americans added a list of rights to the Constitution. The first ten amendments became known as The Bill of Rights

5. Of the 55 delegates attending the Constitutional Convention, 39 signed and 3 delegates dissented. Two of America's "founding fathers" didn't sign the Constitution. Thomas Jefferson was representing his country in France and John Adams was doing the same in Great Britain.

6. Established on November 26, 1789, the first national "Thanksgiving Day" was originally created by George Washington as a way of "giving thanks" for the Constitution.

7. Of the written national constitutions, the U.S. Constitution is the oldest and shortest.

8. At 81, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania was the oldest delegate at the Constitutional Convention and at 26, Jonathon Dayton of New Jersey was the youngest.

9. The original Constitution is on display at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. When the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, it was moved to Fort Knox for safekeeping.

10. More than 11,000 amendments have been introduced in Congress. Thirty three have gone to the states to be ratified and twenty seven have received the necessary approval from the states to actually become amendments to the Constitution

Hack the Vote!

DieBold has long said that their voting machines are 'secure' -- I've always said to that, then let us CHECK them. Well, they don't like that idea, and now we can see why.

Princeton University scientists were able to acquire a DieBold machine and found that DieBold has a VERY different definition for the word 'secure'. Afterall--it's only your vote they're talking about...nothing important or anything.

TELL YOUR FRIENDS! People knowing the truth and demanding change is the only way politicians will DO something about this.

Tupac Shakur: 10 years gone

2PAC Legacy
Music: Rap/Hip Hop

http://www.2paclegacy.com

Tupac Shakur: June 16th, 1971-Sept. 13th, 1996
10 years gone, and the world is worse for it.

September 13th, 1996 -- the day Tupac Shakur shed his mortal coil. To quote Wikipedia:
Tupac is known for the political, economic, and racial equality messages in a lot of his work. He has been ranked by many fans, critics, and industry insiders as the greatest rapper ever.
[emphasis added]
He was more than a rapper, he was a poet. Someone you could admire even if you weren't a fan of Rap music or the Thug Life. Tupac released 5 albums before his death 10 years ago and had barely finished recording his album 'The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory' before the Sept. 7th shooting that would lead to his passing a week later.

Since then many more albums have followed from unreleased works recorded in many of Tupacs sessions. These albums along with lyrics found on
'The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory' have sparked theories among fans that Tupac actually faked his own death.

Sadly, Tupac was cut down in what couldn't even be considered his 'prime'. While he was already a huge success in the music industry, Tupac was looking to branch out and had already added several new businesses to his portfolio. It was even said that Tupac had plans to enter politics as his next big step in trying to help improve the lives of Americans, especially those from the ghettos and tough streets Tupac knew all too well. There's little doubt that had Tupac not been taken so soon, he would have made an even larger impact on the world around him, and perhaps around us all.

While Tupac may be gone physically, his spirit and message live on. It's in these that one finds hope & inspiration along with strength & wisdom far beyond his years. In the end it's these which serve as Tupac Shakur's greatest gift and ultimate legacy.

God Bless The Dead - RIP Tupac Shakur

Lady Sovereign
Music: Hip Hop / Garage / Other

http://www.myspace.com/ladysovereign

Love her or hate her, Lady Sovereign is here to stay.

With the help of Jay-Z and others, along with her amazing rapping skills, Lady Sovereign is set to pounce and take the US by storm. Already she's snagged national exposure in magazines and even supplies the soundtrack for one of Verizon's "Chocolate" commercials.

So I know what you're thinking, "What's the big deal? Another rapper. WOW!" -- well, what makes Lady Sovereign 'different' is that she's British, just barely out of her teens, stands only 5'1", and is probably the whitest girl you've seen in awhile. And yet, she starts spitting out lyrics and you can't help but be blown away. This girl's got SKILL!

So, you've been warned. Time to make way for the SOV!

9/11 Tribute

9/11 video memorial set to "Coda" from the KPAX soundtrack and originally set to the poem "When I have Fears" by John Keats (Below). Very moving piece even without the poem being recited along with the video.

"When I have fears" by John Keats

When I have fears that I may cease to be
Before my pen has glean'd my teeming brain,
Before high-piled books, in charactery,
Hold like rich garners the full ripen'd grain;
When I behold, upon the night's starr'd face,
Huge cloudy symbols of a high romance,
And think that I may never live to trace
Their shadows, with the magic hand of chance;
And when I feel, fair creature of an hour,
That I shall never look upon thee more,
Never have relish in the faery power
Of unreflecting love;--then on the shore
Of the wide world I stand alone, and think
Till love and fame to nothingness do sink
